Avon Fire & Rescue Service Supports Young People Through Ignite Programme

News Mar 2, 2025

The programme helps participants develop essential skills, including job searching, interview techniques, and teamwork, through hands-on training and real-world experiences.

By engaging in station-based activities, young people improve their communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities, equipping them with the confidence to pursue employment or further education.

Mental health awareness is a key focus, with open discussions on well-being and resilience strategies led by firefighters who share their experiences of managing stress in high-pressure situations.

A visit to the fire service control room allowed participants to witness decision-making under pressure, while a modified firefighter fitness test highlighted the importance of physical and mental resilience.

Safety training covered key topics such as water and road safety, alongside practical throw-line rescue demonstrations to enhance awareness and preparedness.

The programme concluded on 14th February with a celebration attended by local representatives, where participants showcased their progress through practical demonstrations and personal reflections.

Mike Hudson, Director of Adult Recruitment at Weston College, said:

On the first day, I walked into the classroom to find a quiet, reserved group of learners. Fast forward to their presentation day at the fire station, and the transformation was remarkable – laughter filled the room! It was a truly rewarding sight and exactly what we set out to achieve. By the end of the course, learners had grown in confidence, stepped out of their comfort zones, and were ready to take their next steps towards employment or further education.

Ignite demonstrates the power of collaboration between education, public services, and employment initiatives, helping young people build brighter futures while reinforcing teamwork, resilience, and public safety.
